My Mary Kay Journey

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten.

The Journey

I started my Mary Kay business like so many others, NERVOUS yet EXCITED!  I had tried Mary Kay in 8th grade, but my mom always said "That is too expensive for me to buy you and you can buy it for yourself one day." When I turned 21, I received my first Free Facial as an "adult" and totally loved the facts about the company, how I could earn some extra money, all while looking cute at 50% OFF Win!

At this time in my life, I was a recent college graduate and had just landed my dream job as a an Occupational Therapy Assistant for a brand new hospital! It was gorgeous!  About 18 months into it, I realized that there must be more to life than working 7-3 everyday working enough to get a pitiful 40cent raise.  But, I stayed for another 2 years because I had a fair paycheck, close to home and I enjoyed helping patients get back to being independent after a life altering situation.  But I truly was yearning for something MORE.  I knew there was a greater life in store for me outside of the Medical Field.  But I didn't know where I would find it. Until I learned all about Mary Kay at my first facial!  I saw hope and an oppotrunity to be finacially free! Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, I had some fun in College and racked up some pretty large school loans and credit cards.....So financial hope is what I needed!

Problem was, I only knew how I liked to do my own makeup and knew very minimum about skincare and I wasn't sure who I could sell to. But, after joining Mary Kay, I found out that they teach you everything you need to know!  And anyone that is teachable and coachable can also learn the simple steps to be a success.

So I decided to start a Mary Kay business!  I joined nervous, scared but excited! I also did not feel confident speaking in front of people. I may have appeared that way, but I honestly felt like Moses.....studdering and stammering!   But, I joined with a dream.  A dream that I could change my life and ultimately impact the lives of others.

I had heard there were more women earning over $100k/year in Mary Kay that in any other company in America and I met several who claimed to make $10k a month, $20k a month, $60k a month and that gave me hope.  And lets face it, I needed money with the credit cards and college loans I had racked up! Now, I assure, you, I don't tell this to you to impress you, but just to impress upon you, that Mary Kay can be an excellent source of income when you need it to be.

8 months after joining Mary Kay, my Sales Director told me how I could become a Director too, and I was like "yeah...thats not me...I'm a hot mess.....and you're all put together and look great!" However, the entire time I worked my business, she called me a Hot Shot. I told her I just wanted to earn a Free Car because mine was on the outs. Seriously, I had to use the key to unlock my car door and the alarm went off EVERY time! It was so embarassing! And every time I would push on the breaks(especially going down a mountain) my entire car would shake and and I would be vibrating, praying "God please slow this car down." LOL! I think you get the picture, I needed a new car. So thats what I focused on!

6 months later I earned the use of a Free Mary Kay Career Car! It was amazing! I went to the dealership, signed a paper and they gave me the keys!! Hello! Is that a dream!? I had never had a brand new car and now I finally did!! My parents were very proud at that moment. My dad would look through the Mary Kay Applause Magazine and check out all the commissions that the Top Directors were making! He was impressed!

My Dad, "Ed" is technically my Step dad because my biological father died when I was very young. Ed is a hard worker. He works everyday as a Landscaper doing manual labor. He has stepped into my family and taken care of my mom, brother and now little brother.  The part of this story that breaks my heart is the fact that he is physically breaking down his body day in and day out, all for a paycheck to live week to week. There is not getting ahead, minimal saving. My mom "Mollee" is a caregiver for a few elderly people and does a great job managing the household duties. I have an amazing set of parents.

Well now that you know my background :) 4 Months after earning the use of my First Free MK Car, I promoted myself as an Independent Sales Director!! Finally! I was ready to move up and triple my income!

I currently am paying off my Student Loans and Credit Card debt, and my dream is to be Debt Free and then be able to help out my parents financially with the income I make through my Mary Kay business!

Today, our team has exploded from 10 team members to almost 50 and continues to grow like a weed!  I am so proud of the women in our unit!

Our unit is made up of women from all over the nation!!  We are spread out down the entire East Coast.  We are busy professionals, nurses, stay-at-home moms, servers, small business owners, teachers, successful entrepreneurs, grandmas and college students. There is no cookie cutter for a successful Mary Kay lady.  Any woman with determination and faith can be a success.  I am proud to say that today our unit is currently working to build to a Fabulous 50s Unit and go on target for that prestigious Pink Cadillac!!

Mary Kay has been a blessing in my life in so many ways.  I've met so many wonderful friends, that I never would have crossed paths with had it not been for Mary Kay.  Mary Kay has made me a more confident person, a more positive thinker and has taught me how to successfully manage and run my own business.  it has been better than any self-improvement, entreprenuership or leadership course I could have ever taken in college.

Today, I don't have a BOSS!  I set my own hours and work my business around my life.  I feel blessed to be able to share with other women that you truly can have it all: You can be home, you can be a wonderful mother, an amazing wife and you can run your own lucrative business.  And, if you'd like to hire a little help around the house, you can because with a Mary Kay business, you can afford it. Overall, my priorities have shifted and I am now able to put God first, family second and my career third.

Maybe you are reading this and thinking that you want to help others, learn how to be an entrepreneur, make more friends or overcome your shyness.  Or maybe you need to make an extra $200 a week or you have a desire to make millions so you can give back to others. Mary Kay can be the answer to your prayers.

Truly, it doesn't matter where you started in this wonderful life, it matters where you finish. Life is not a dress rehearsal.  You have one shot to live your dream life.  What are you waiting for?  Let your life story be your motivation for a better life, not your excuse.

What's your dream for your life?  I can't wait to hear from you!
